Piano Trio . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Maurice Ravel

Mary Towse-Beck, piano; Alexander Romanul, violin; Dorothy Braker, cello

Aliento Chamber Players performs piano trios from both ends of the two World Wars. Before Maurice Ravel was able to join World War I as a soldier, he had to finish his piano Trio. As World War II was winding to a close, Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio Number 2 to honor the memory of his closest friend. The differences between the two trios, which are regarded as some of the most difficult in the literature, are even more stunning when thought of in this context.
